What is RSS?

Depending whom you ask, RSS stands for "Real Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary." An RSS file contains headlines, summaries and links that are formatted in XML (eXtensible Markup Language). RSS is usually a slimmed-down version of a Web site. Images and other supplementary information are not included in an RSS feed.

It is read by a program called an RSS reader, also known as a news aggregator. There are three types of news aggregators: stand-alone programs, e-mail-integrated applications, and Web-based aggregators. Once you have set up an aggregator, it will check the RSS locations for you as often as you want and let you know when new content is available. That allows you to check one location, your aggregator, for updated content for hundreds of websites, blogs, forums, etc..

How is RSS different than an e-mail newsletter?

E-mail newsletters are usually delivered at a time chosen by the publisher. RSS gives you more control by always being available and staying updated. Another advantage RSS has over e-mail is that you don't have to supply an e-mail address or any other information to get the headlines. You just tell the aggregator where to go to check for the RSS file.

Once it has gathered the RSS feed information, you will be given a list of topics or headlines. You click on them to see a summary of the related information, and then click the link to see the full content.

How do I unsubscribe?
